This was a question I asked in early 2016 and continued to explore as the foundation of my thesis with Parsons School of Design. I conducted research through the fall, interviewing and shadowing 30 professionals, hosting 2 wine and dines, participating in 3 immersions, evaluating 11 observations, and noting, quoting, and highlighting over 120 documents.
What I found is a consistent pattern in how people embrace vulnerability, first through the need for change I have titled “drivers” and second through“safety nets” that provide us assurance in our ambiguous moments. From these insights I have created a framework we can apply to the challenging, ambiguous decisions we find ourselves in and what “safety-nets” we can build to remove the feeling of vulnerability. Currently, I am building a prototype that propels us to embrace vulnerability in our professional lives without the feeling of anxiety and question.
