Township schools with small budgets tend to cut the arts first in their curriculums, if introduced at all. While running after-school programs in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, I began to talk to youth who expressed an interest in art but did not have an outlet to explore their interest.
After talking to teachers, students, community members and R&D experts, I drew up lesson plans and piloted the curriculum. The program utilized the principles of drawing to instill lessons on resilience, empowerment, and positive self-image. The 10 weeks culminated with a final painting or mural the student created together based on what they love about their community, their school, and themselves.
